    About each lab

Lab · natural and lab-grown GIA. The Gemological Institute of America. Independent nonprofit lab, founded 1931. Natural diamond reports give the 4Cs. From 1 October 2025 GIA lab-grown assessments are Premium or Standard rather than colour and clarity grades; earlier lab-grown reports remain valid.

Lab · natural and lab-grown IGI. The International Gemological Institute. Founded in Antwerp in 1975. Reports for natural and laboratory-grown diamonds; lab-grown stones are inscribed with an LG prefix and the report number.

Lab · natural HRD Antwerp. Antwerp grading laboratory. Reports confirm whether a stone is natural, laboratory-grown or treated, and cover carat, colour, clarity and cut.

  • Natural origin

Kimberley Process and System of Warranties

Natural rough diamonds cross borders with a government-issued Kimberley Process certificate.

Polished stones don't carry one, so the trade uses the World Diamond Council System of Warranties: a written statement on every business invoice that the diamonds come from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict.

  • Origin disclosure

    Natural or lab-grown, always stated

Natural and laboratory-grown stones are listed, stored and invoiced separately.

Every laboratory-grown stone says so, next to the word diamond.

Lab descriptions are the labs' own. We supply reports as issued. Melee and cut-to-spec stones are graded in-house and sold without a lab report; they are labelled that way.

Why the trade buys from us

Graded by the lab, or cut to your spec.

Superior Gems is a diamond wholesaler with offices in Australia, India, the USA, Canada and Hong Kong. We hand-select natural and lab-grown diamonds from around the world. Certified stones carry a GIA, IGI or HRD report you can check with the lab yourself. Most of our buyers grade their own stones, so we also make loose diamonds to their requirements, without the cost of a certificate. Natural stones are sourced in line with the Kimberley Process and the System of Warranties, and natural and lab-grown are kept apart.

About Superior Gems   Our sourcing approach

Every certified stone is verifiable.

Check any report on the lab's own site in three steps.

  1. 01

    Find the report number

It is on the report, and laser-inscribed on the stone's girdle (seen under 10x magnification).

  2. 02

Check it on the lab's site

Enter the number on the lab's own page, not ours.

  3. 03

    Match it to the stone

Shape, carat weight and grades should match the stone's listing, and the girdle inscription should match the number. If anything differs, stop and call us.

An online lookup shows the report is genuine and unaltered in the lab's records. It does not prove the stone in your hand is the one it describes; only the girdle inscription does that.

Melee and cut-to-spec stones are graded in-house and come without a lab report.

Questions before you buy

The short version. Full detail in How to buy.

Who can register?

Registered jewellery and diamond businesses. We verify each business before approval, as dealers in high-value goods should.

How do holds work?

Approved buyers can hold any available stone for 24 hours. A held stone is reserved for you and hidden from other buyers until the hold ends or you order it.

How do I pay?

Unless we agree credit terms in writing, orders are paid in full before dispatch. We never change bank details by email: call our Sydney office on +61 410 058 909 if asked to pay a new account. We accept international wire transfer, and local transfer in Australia and Canada.

How are stones shipped?

Insured, with a secure carrier. Customs duties and import taxes in your country are paid by the buyer unless we agree otherwise. We ship with FedEx or Malca-Amit.

Can I return a stone?

A stone can be returned only if its listing shows it as returnable: within 7 days of delivery, unset, in the same condition and with its certificate. Melee parcels and cut-to-spec stones can't be returned unless faulty or not as described. See How to buy.

How do I verify a certificate?

Every certified stone carries its lab and report number. Check it on the lab's own website: verify a certificate.
